Group Experience – 
Historic St. John’s, Quidi Vidi, Cape Spear and The Rooms Tour

Become acquainted with the city of St. John’s and its surroundings, including Cape Spear, the most Easterly point in North America. This is the oldest colonized region in the new world and your local guide will regale you with its steeped history, legends & lore – all flavored with their personal anecdotes and good humor from which Newfoundlanders are so famous. Enjoy the brilliant vistas from Cabot Tower and Signal Hill, one of the most recognizable skylines in Canada. Walk through a cliffside World War II gun battery, watch for whales and seabirds and visit the oldest standing lighthouse in North America. Other stops include Quidi Vidi Village, Jelly Bean Row, Government House, the Roman Catholic Basilica and an orientation of the shops and restaurants of the downtown core. Following the tours, you will transfer to The Rooms where a personal guide will provide a tour of the museums showcasing Newfoundland and Labrador’s history.

Welcome Event – Rally in the Alley

St. John’s has more bars and pubs per capita than any other city in Canada and most of them are located on the famous George Street. During “Rally in the Alley”, you will get the opportunity to experience the nightlife of downtown St. John’s, kicking off with a traditional Fish and Chips dinner. Following your delicious meal, the night continues with stops at 3 popular pubs with organized activities featuring local entertainment and cultural experiences in each venue… A night you won’t soon forget!

Spousal Activity – Around the Bay Tour

Experience the culinary traditions of the many outport communities that sprinkle the shores of Conception Bay, and make a stop of the incredible “Conception Harbour Shipwreak. Not only is the region teeming with stories about ancient pirates, WW2 submarine attacks, and North America’s first European colony, it is also a place to connect to traditional relationships with food. The tour includes a traditional Newfoundland Seafood meal, as well as a visit to the Newfoundland Distillery, which uses local ingredients to craft unique and award-winning drinks.

The Advantages and Deliverables of Drones in the Roofing Sector
Speaker – Steve Priestley

Steve will focus his presentation on the advantages and deliverables of drone potential. The vastly emerging technology is allowing the building sciences and roofing sectors to change the ways they can enhance outputs. Steve will cover off topics such as zoom inspections, thermal inspections, 3D mapping and enhancement, training requirements and how to upscale a larger or small drone program in a cost-effective manner.

2st Business Session –
Two Decades of SIGDER’s Scientific Advancement to North America Roofing Community
Speaker – Dr. Bas Baskaran

On Nov. 16, 1994, members of the roofing community met at the National Research Council of Canada and formed a group with a common focus of evaluating roofing systems under dynamic environment. Thus, a Special Interest Group on Dynamic Evaluation of Roofing Systems (SIGDERS) was created. The mandate of SIGDERS joint research program is to carry out generic, pre-competitive research of benefit to all its members. SIGDERS operation is one of a kind in the world not only for its legacy of a long-lasting R&D consortia, but also the some of the following industry impacts it created.

Static vs dynamic evaluations of roofs its pros and cons?
Diagnoses of a weak link to enable innovation
Nominal vs Design tensile strength of steel deck – is it important
Membrane seaming – an investigation of an innovation
Air leakage vs intrusion – is there any difference
How much roof edge matters?
Wind science of Vegetated roofs
Field measured vs code specification

Speaker – John Kenney

Speaker – John Kenney

The global roofing market by 2026 will grow to CAD 250.03 billion, and the Roofing Industry will face various threats impacting contractors on multiple levels. These include skilled labour shortages, the strain on production output, continued supply chain issues, economic changes, and technological advances.

This business session will review current and future impacts and what a roofing contractor can do to adapt processes, embrace technologies and overcome the industry’s most challenging hurdles in any economic environment. We will learn how to best adapt to the new normal and protect a Roofing Contractor’s bottom line.

Taking the stage will be The Spirit of Newfoundland as they offer colorful vocals and a theatrical stage show featuring 4 vocalists, an exceptional band, and an irreverent host. Through comedy, quick wit, stage choreography and original musical arrangements, the cast creates beautiful harmonies and musical theatre to celebrate the special culture of Newfoundland and Labrador.

 Closing Keynote Speaker – Derm Flynn

In 2001, Derm Flynn was the Mayor of a small town directly impacted by the tragic events of 9/11. His family, like all residents of Central N.L. became fully involved in the efforts to host the 6,800 “Plane People” who landed on their doorsteps. The Flynn’s hosted many guests while being fully engaged in the town’s efforts to support the Town of Gander as a whole. 

Derm’s efforts eventually led to his character being portrayed in the hit Musical “Come From Away”. The Musical has received countless awards and recognition and continues to entertain people around the world.

Derm will be speaking on the 9/11 response, the success of Come From Away and its impact on the beautiful province of Newfoundland, Canada.
